Breast augmentation, or ¡®boob job¡¯, is the most common cosmetic operation. Years of improvements in the safety and durability of the implants themselves, coupled with advances in surgical techniques, have combined to make this operation increasingly reliable and with shorter recovery times.

Initially round, implants are now available in a wide range of anatomical shapes and sizes. All have a silicone shell, but may be filled with saline, or more commonly, silicone gel. Silicone has been scientifically proven to be safe and have no links to beast cancer, autoimmune diseases or infant diseases from breastfeeding.

Breast augmentation is used not only for hypomastia (small breasts), but also asymmetry. Its most common use is probably in restoring shape after pregnancy and breastfeeding where the breast is empty and ptotic (droopy). The latter often requires mastopexy (uplift), but use of the biplanar technique ¨C pioneered in the UK by PSP ¨C can have a similar effect in many women without extra scars
